A Vastu-aligned home by DesigningAxis by Shivani — where luxury meets Vastu precision.
Moving into a new home is one of the most significant events in a family's life. In Vastu Shastra — the ancient Indian science of space and energy — the way a home is oriented, the way its rooms are arranged, and the way each space is used, determines the quality of health, wealth, relationships, and peace that the family experiences within it. This guide walks you through the complete Vastu framework for a new home, room by room.
"Vastu is not superstition — it is spatial science. The directional principles of Vastu are rooted in the movement of the sun, the Earth's magnetic field, and the natural energy flows of the five elements. When a home is aligned with these forces, life within it simply flows better. When it conflicts with them, the friction is constant and often inexplicable."
— Shivani Mathur, Lead Designer & Vastu Consultant · 20 Years ExperienceVastu Shastra divides the home into eight primary zones, each governed by a specific element, planet, and deity. Understanding which zone governs which energy is the foundation of all Vastu analysis.
The 8 Vastu directions with elements, planets and energy meanings — by DesigningAxis by Shivani.
| Direction | Element | Planet | Governs | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North (N) | Water | Mercury / Kuber | Wealth, career, opportunity | Living room, home office, treasury |
| North-East (NE) | Water + Ether | Jupiter | Spirituality, wisdom, health | Pooja room, meditation, open space |
| East (E) | Fire (Solar) | Sun | Health, clarity, new beginnings | Living room, children's room, entrance |
| South-East (SE) | Fire | Venus | Energy, nourishment, vitality | Kitchen only |
| South (S) | Fire (Earth) | Mars | Fame, recognition, protection | Bedroom, storage |
| South-West (SW) | Earth | Rahu | Stability, strength, relationships | Master bedroom, heavy storage |
| West (W) | Air | Saturn | Gains, results, completion | Dining room, children's bedroom |
| North-West (NW) | Air | Moon | Movement, communication, guests | Guest room, kitchen (second choice) |
The main entrance is where all energy — positive and negative — enters your home. It is arguably the single most important Vastu element of any property. The direction your main door faces, the direction it opens, and the energy of the entrance area all have profound effects on the family's fortunes.
Governed by Kuber — most auspicious for wealth and career growth. Excellent for all families, particularly business owners.
Governed by the Sun — brings health, clarity and positive new energy. Excellent for young families and those starting new ventures.
Acceptable. Associated with Saturn — brings gains but slowly. More neutral than auspicious but not problematic.
The most misunderstood direction. Not inauspicious by itself — placement within the South face matters greatly. Requires specific Vastu remedies and expert assessment.
✦ Key Insight — South-Facing Homes
South-facing homes are not inherently bad — this is one of the most common Vastu myths. Many highly successful families live in South-facing homes. The key is that the entrance must be positioned in the correct pada (section) of the South face, and specific remedies must be applied. A professional Vastu consultation is essential for South-facing properties before purchase or design.
Vastu Home Room Placement Diagram — where each room should be placed for maximum positive energy, by DesigningAxis by Shivani.
The SW zone is governed by the Earth element — the zone of stability, strength, and lasting relationships. The head of the family sleeping in the SW bedroom naturally assumes a position of authority and groundedness. This is the single most important room placement in Vastu.
The SE zone is governed by fire — making it the natural and only truly correct placement for the kitchen. The fire of cooking aligns with the fire energy of the SE zone, supporting health, nourishment, and vitality. North-West is acceptable as a second choice.
The NE is the most sacred zone in Vastu — the zone of Jupiter, spirituality, and divine energy. The pooja room belongs here always. This zone should be kept light, clean, and never used for storage or heavy furniture.
The North (Kuber's zone) and East (Sun's zone) are ideal for the living room — the social heart of the home. Both directions bring positive, welcoming energy that supports social harmony and new opportunities.
The West zone (Saturn — gains and results) supports study discipline and academic achievement. North-West (Moon — movement and growth) supports the developing child's natural curiosity and social skills.
Bathrooms belong in the South or West of the home. The most critical Vastu rule: the bathroom should never share a wall with the pooja room, and the kitchen and bathroom should never be adjacent or on the same wall.
Most families discover Vastu issues after they have already moved into a home. The good news is that the vast majority of Vastu doshas can be corrected through remedies — without any structural changes, demolition, or major expense.
| Vastu Dosha | Remedy (No Demolition) | Effectiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen in NE | Relocate cooking to SE quadrant using portable hob; paint walls orange/yellow; place a fire lamp continuously | High — if cooking direction corrected |
| Master Bedroom in NE | Sleep with head pointing South; keep NE corner of bedroom completely clear; place heavy furniture in SW corner | Medium-High |
| South-facing entrance | Install a brass nameplate; place a Swastik symbol above door; use specific Vastu yantras — needs expert guidance | High with correct remedy |
| Toilet in NE | Keep door closed always; place sea salt in a bowl inside; plant inside if light available; specific yantra placement | Medium |
| Staircase in NE | Place plants and water features in NE to activate positive energy; ensure NE is well-lit | Medium |
| Broken/leaking taps | Fix immediately — leaking water = draining wealth energy. No remedy substitutes the fix. | Immediate upon fixing |
Vastu Shastra is built on the Pancha Bhuta — the five elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space (Ether). A Vastu-balanced home has all five elements represented and in harmony. Here is how to bring each element into your home through interior design.
